Who can still duplicate a GPT
| Account | New GPTs and Duplicate | Retirement |
|---|---|---|
| Personal: Free, Go, Plus and Pro | Not available: personal accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs | December 11, 2026 |
| Affected Enterprise workspaces | Not available since October 26, 2026 | December 11, 2026, or February 11, 2027 with an approved deferral |
| FedRAMP workspaces | Still available: the creation cutoff does not apply to them | February 11, 2027 |
| Other managed workspaces | Depends on the workspace settings and your role | The date in your workspace notice |
Where Duplicate still appears, it is in the GPT editor's more options menu, next to the GPT link, version history and delete. OpenAI's page on editing GPTs says "Duplicating a GPT is available only when your account or workspace is eligible to create new GPTs" (Creating and editing GPTs). The personal-account rule is in Sharing and publishing GPTs.
A duplicate is still a custom GPT, so it retires with the original. To keep the work after the retirement, you need a copy that lives outside the GPT system.
Copy a GPT you made
- Open the editor on the web. Explore GPTs (or chatgpt.com/gpts), then My GPTs, the GPT and Edit GPT. OpenAI says creating and editing GPTs is available on the web, and that the mobile apps support using GPTs but not creating them.
- Copy the text. The name, description, instructions and conversation starters, and a note of the capabilities that are switched on.
- Gather the knowledge files. OpenAI describes no download for them, so start from your own copies: what to try for knowledge files.
- Copy each action's schema and write down its authentication method: what to save from an action.
- Pack it. Skillcase turns the copy into one backup and a skill for Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT, in your browser.
Version history, in the same menu, restores an earlier version of the same GPT. It is not a copy, and OpenAI notes that restoring an older version of a GPT with actions can mean setting up its authentication again.
Copy a GPT someone else made
You can see a GPT's setup only if its creator shared it with you as "Can view settings". OpenAI says that level lets people use the GPT and view its configuration, that duplicating it also requires eligibility to create new GPTs, and that public link sharing and GPT Store publishing do not offer it (Sharing and publishing GPTs). With "Can chat" you see no settings.
The instructions and files belong to the creator, so ask them for a copy, or for the plugin they move the GPT to. OpenAI's FAQ says access to a GPT does not give you access to its replacement plugin (Custom GPT retirement and migration FAQ). Your own chats with the GPT are yours: save your custom GPT chats.
Move a GPT to another account
OpenAI's pages describe no way to transfer a GPT between accounts. Migration to a plugin happens in the account or workspace where the GPT was created, by its creator or a workspace admin, and the plugin starts private (Custom GPT retirement and migration FAQ). In a managed workspace, Share Plugin can offer it to the people who used the GPT.
To use the GPT in a different account, take the copy above and rebuild it there: in ChatGPT with Plugin Creator, which OpenAI says you install from the plugin directory and then describe what to build (Plugins in ChatGPT), or as a skill in Claude or Gemini.
Pack your GPT before December 11
Paste your GPT's setup, add its knowledge files and your ChatGPT export, and download a backup you can open anywhere, a skill for Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT, and your chats as Markdown. Free, in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Is there a Duplicate button for custom GPTs?
It is in the GPT editor's more options menu, but OpenAI says duplicating is available only when your account or workspace is eligible to create new GPTs. Personal accounts (Free, Go, Plus and Pro) are not.
Can I clone a GPT from the GPT Store?
No. OpenAI says public link sharing and GPT Store publishing do not support "Can view settings", so a public GPT's instructions and files are not shown to the people who use it.
Can I transfer a custom GPT to another account?
OpenAI describes no transfer. Copy the setup in the account where you made the GPT, then rebuild it in the other account as a plugin, or as a skill in Claude or Gemini.
Will a copy survive December 11?
A duplicate inside ChatGPT is a custom GPT too, so it retires with the rest. A backup, a skill or a plugin made from your copy does not depend on custom GPTs.
