Open an IMSCC file and read your Canvas course

Canvas Free-for-Teacher is gone for good, and its last download window closed on October 6, 2026. Each course you saved is an .imscc file. Choose one here to read every module, page, assignment and quiz again, answers included.

Choose a course export

Drop an .imscc file into this cubby, or choose it from your computer. A Canvas quiz export (QTI .zip) works too.

The sample is a made-up Grade 7 science course with three modules, a rubric and a quiz that uses every Classic Quiz question type.

Not sure what you have? What an .imscc file is. Lost your Free-for-Teacher courses? What happened and what is left.

  • Modules in the order Canvas showed them, with pages, assignments and their rubrics, discussions, links and files.
  • Every quiz question with its correct answer, from multiple choice to matching, blanks and formula questions.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The file is read in this tab, on your own computer.

Where the .imscc file comes from

Canvas writes it when a teacher exports a course. In a course you still have access to:

  1. Open the course and choose Settings in the course menu.
  2. Choose Export Course Content on the right.
  3. Pick Course, then Create Export.
  4. When it finishes, download the file. Its name ends in .imscc.

Choosing Quiz instead gives a QTI .zip of the quizzes only, which Cubby opens too. Schools, Moodle, Schoology and other systems write .imscc files as well; Cubby is built and tested on Canvas exports, so a file from elsewhere may show fewer details.

What is inside, and what is not

The export is a ZIP. Canvas keeps each page as a web page, each assignment and quiz in its own folder, and your uploaded files in web_resources. Renaming it to .zip lets you see those parts, but not the course: the order of modules, which quiz answer is right and which page links where are written in machine files. Cubby puts that back together.

A course export never holds student work: no submissions, grades, quiz attempts or discussion replies. Canvas leaves those out on purpose.

Questions

How do I open an .imscc file without Canvas?

Choose the file on this page. Cubby reads it in your browser and shows the course the way Canvas listed it: modules in order, then every page, assignment, quiz, discussion and file. Quizzes show each question with the correct answer. You can print or copy any item and download any file.

Is my course uploaded?

No. The file is read by this page on your own computer. Nothing in it is sent anywhere, and closing the tab discards it. We count page visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics: no cookies, no personal data, and never your files. When you click a Pro button, a counter of our own adds one to a daily total for this tool, with the page and the kind of site that sent you: no cookies, no personal data, no IP address kept, and never your files.

Canvas Free-for-Teacher is gone. Can I still get my courses?

Only if you exported them. Instructure permanently discontinued Free-for-Teacher after the May 2026 security incident, and the last download window ran from September 30 to October 6, 2026. If you downloaded .imscc files then, open them here. If you did not, Cubby cannot get anything back, because the course only exists on Instructure's servers. The full timeline, with sources.

Can I see the quiz answers?

Yes. Classic Quizzes are saved in the export with their scoring rules, and Cubby works out the correct answer of every question from them: multiple choice, true or false, multiple answers, fill in the blank, multiple blanks, dropdowns, matching, numerical answers and the formula of formula questions. Essays and file uploads have no answer in the file.

What does Cubby Pro add?

Pro costs $8, paid once. It saves the whole course in one go: every page, assignment and quiz in one file you can keep or print as a PDF, every quiz as a Word file plus a Word answer key, every question in a spreadsheet and in Moodle's import format, and all the course files in one ZIP. Reading, printing and copying one item at a time stay free.

Is Cubby made by Instructure?

No. Cubby is an independent tool by Peak Apps Studio and is not affiliated with Instructure. Canvas is a trademark of Instructure, named here only to say which files the tool opens.
