Your Spotify files stay in your browser
When you open your Spotify data download on the Earhours page, JavaScript in that browser tab reads it. The files are not uploaded to us or to anyone else. Inside a ZIP, Earhours opens only the streaming history files (StreamingHistory and Streaming_History files, or endsong files in older downloads) and skips the rest, such as your user details, payment details, playlists and search history.
From each play it keeps the time, how long it ran, the song, artist, album, episode or show name, and whether the song was skipped or played on shuffle. It never reads the IP address, user agent, platform or country that the extended history also holds. Everything it works out lives in the tab's memory and is gone when you close the tab or press Start over. Nothing from your files is written to your browser's storage.
The story cards and the CSV are drawn and built in the tab. They leave your device only if you save or share them yourself.
What the page does send
- Visit counts. Page visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and collects no personal data. Your files and numbers are never part of it.
- The Pro license check. When you paste a license key, the key and the product id are sent to Gumroad's license check (api.gumroad.com) to see whether the purchase is valid. Gumroad's answer is kept in your browser's local storage so Pro stays on, and it is checked again about once a week.
- Where you came from. The page keeps one word for the kind of site that sent you (for example search or social) in your browser's storage. It is added to the Gumroad link only if you click to buy Pro, so a sale shows its channel. No address or identifier is kept.
Buying Pro happens on Gumroad, under Gumroad's privacy policy. We receive the order details Gumroad gives sellers (such as your email address) so we can answer questions about your purchase.
Terms
- Earhours is provided as it is. The numbers come from the file Spotify gives you; we check the way they are added up, but we can't promise they match any figure Spotify shows elsewhere.
- Pro is a one-time purchase of $5 for personal use on your own browsers. Gumroad handles payment and refunds; if Pro does not work with your file, write to us and we will look at it.
- Use Earhours only with data you have the right to read, such as your own Spotify download.
- Earhours is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Spotify AB. Spotify is a trademark of Spotify AB. The story cards do not use Spotify's logo or brand design.
