The short answer
- AO3 is down for maintenance that, by OTW's own account, grew out of a security incident. OTW's status page, read on October 31, 2026, gives no return date.
- If you have EPUB, HTML or PDF downloads on your device, open them in Ficshelf. It reads them in your browser and never contacts AO3.
- If you have nothing saved, nothing can be downloaded until AO3 is back. Do not use scripts that hammer the site when it returns; see what works for downloading bookmarks.
- If you reuse your AO3 password on other sites, change it there. That is OTW's advice, quoted below.
What OTW's status page says
The page is otwstatus.org. These are its entries for this incident, newest first, with the times it shows (UTC).
| When | Status | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 30, 2026, 01:27 | Update | Evidence of a security incident was detected. AO3 stays down while the investigation continues. Expected down "for a minimum of two weeks; however, it could take up to four weeks". The site may come back "in a degraded state", possibly read-only, and may have to go down again. |
| Oct 29, 2026, 17:41 | Update | "We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks." |
| Oct 29, 2026, 09:03 | Identified | "AO3 maintenance is in progress. We expect it to take at least 12 hours, but it may take longer." |
| Oct 29, 2026, 07:13 | Investigating | "AO3 is down for maintenance." |
From the latest entry, in OTW's words:
"no AO3 data has been deleted. All your works, bookmarks, kudos, etc., are safe."
"while we currently don't believe that the user database was stolen, we are also unable to rule it out. The AO3 database contains account information that may include your username, email address, IP address, and a hashed version of your password."
"we recommend that you change your passwords on any other sites where you use the same password as on AO3."
That is OTW's statement, not ours. This page makes no guess about whether anything was copied, and none about the day AO3 returns.
Reading what you already saved
- Find the folder where your AO3 downloads are (EPUB, HTML or PDF files). A ZIP of them works too.
- Open Ficshelf, choose the folder, and wait a few seconds. Every fic appears with its tags, rating, word count and chapters.
- Click a fic to read it. Your place is kept in the browser.
- After the first visit the page also opens without a connection.
Ficshelf was written to the layout AO3 documents for its downloads. AO3 being down, no real AO3 file could be opened while it was built, so if one of your files does not open as it should, write to info@peakappsstudio.com.
If you have no downloads
- Wait. OTW says the works are safe.
- If an author or a friend offers you a copy of their own fic, a PDF or an EPUB, that is theirs to give. Ask, and respect a no. Ficshelf opens whatever they send.
- Other sites have their own rules for fan works, and those rules differ from AO3's. This page does not recommend one.
When AO3 is back
Download what you want to keep, one work at a time or with the community tools described in this guide, and keep the files in one folder. This page will be updated and then become a standing page about reading AO3 downloads while the site is unavailable.
Have downloads on this device? Open the folder and read them now. Nothing is uploaded and AO3 is never contacted.
Open your downloads in FicshelfFicshelf Pro, $8 paid once: search inside every fic, merge a series into one EPUB, a tidy ZIP of the whole library and a catalog as CSV. Get Pro on Gumroad or see what is free.
Questions
Why is AO3 down?
OTW says AO3 went down for maintenance on October 29, 2026 and that it then detected evidence of a security incident. It says it is still determining the scope.
How long will AO3 be down?
OTW's status page says at least two weeks and possibly up to four, from its updates of October 29 and 30, 2026. It also says the site may return first in a degraded or read-only state.
Is my AO3 data safe?
OTW says no AO3 data has been deleted and that works, bookmarks and kudos are safe. It also says it cannot rule out that the user database was stolen, and that it holds usernames, email addresses, IP addresses and hashed passwords. It recommends changing a password you reuse on other sites.
Can I read AO3 fics while AO3 is down?
Only the ones you saved earlier. Open the EPUB, HTML or PDF files in Ficshelf, which works without AO3.
Does Ficshelf connect to AO3?
No. It never contacts AO3, hosts no fics and only opens files that are already on your device.
