The short answer
- If you can, download the EPUB or HTML of the same work from AO3 once it is back. They hold the chapters and tags a PDF has lost.
- If the PDF is all you have, you can still read it: Ficshelf lists it and your browser opens it. Amazon lists PDF among the files Send to Kindle accepts, so a Kindle can take it unchanged.
- If you must convert, expect line breaks in the middle of sentences and headings that are plain text.
Why the conversion breaks
| An EPUB needs | A PDF has |
|---|---|
| Paragraphs that reflow to the screen | Lines set to a page width, often with a hyphen or a line break inside a word |
| Chapter files and a table of contents | Pages; a chapter is just larger text |
| Tags and a summary as data | The same words as plain text on the first page |
| Text in reading order | Text in the order it was drawn, which differs for columns and notes |
What Ficshelf does with a PDF
- It lists the PDF from its file name (our own tidy names read
Author - Title [id].pdf) and opens it in your browser's own viewer. - It does not read the PDF's text and does not convert it. Search and merging skip PDFs.
- If the same work is also in your folder as an EPUB or HTML, the duplicates list shows both and says which to keep.
Have the HTML or EPUB too? Open the folder and Ficshelf shows which copy of each work is the whole one.

Questions
How do I convert an AO3 PDF to EPUB?
A PDF does not hold chapters or reflowing paragraphs, so converters guess and the result is rough. If you can, download the EPUB or HTML of the work from AO3 instead.
Why is my AO3 PDF download not working?
We cannot check AO3 while it is down. If the file will not open, try your browser's own PDF viewer, and download the work again as an EPUB or HTML when AO3 is back.
Can Kindle take a PDF?
Amazon's Send to Kindle page read on October 31, 2026 lists PDF among the supported types.
Does Ficshelf read PDFs?
It lists them and opens them in your browser. It does not read their text.
