The short answer
- Download the fics from AO3 while it is up. EPUB and HTML both work; a PDF is listed and opens in your browser's viewer.
- Put them in one folder, or in a ZIP.
- Open Ficshelf and choose the folder (or the files, or the ZIP).
- Read. The page remembers your place and, if you leave Remember my shelf on, the list of fics.
Each work has its own Download button on AO3 (search listings describe EPUB, HTML and PDF among its formats; AO3 was offline on October 31, 2026, so its own help pages were not opened).
On a PC or a Mac
- In Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, open Ficshelf.
- Press Choose a folder and pick the folder with your downloads, or drop the folder on the page.
- Press the spine or the title of a fic, then Read it.
Chrome and Edge can also remember the folder (Choose a folder and remember it) and ask permission again on your next visit. That button cannot pick a system folder such as Downloads itself; a subfolder works. Safari and Firefox ask for the folder every time, and the page says so.
On an Android phone or an iPhone
- Open Ficshelf in the phone's browser.
- Press Choose files and pick the EPUB or HTML files from the phone's Files app. Several at once are fine.
- If the folder button does nothing on your phone, use Choose files, or put the downloads in one ZIP and choose that.
The shelf, the filters and the reader work at phone width. Large libraries list faster on a computer.
What works with no connection
| Task | Needs a connection? |
|---|---|
| Listing your files, filters, shelf, table | No |
| Reading a fic, saving it as EPUB, text or a printable page | No |
| Opening this page again after the first visit | No (the page keeps its own files in this browser) |
| Checking a Pro key with Gumroad | Yes, once, when you paste the key |
| Visit counts for this page | Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page visits without cookies; it never sees your files |
What the page keeps in your browser
- With Remember my shelf on, one small record per fic (title, author, tags, counts, file path). Never the files or their text. Forget this shelf empties it.
- Your place in each fic you read.
- Nothing is sent to AO3 or to anyone else.
AO3's links inside a fic are shown as plain text in the reader, so the page never sends you to AO3 by itself.
Ready? Choose your folder and read. The sample library shows how it works if you have no files at hand.
Open your downloads in FicshelfFicshelf Pro, $8 paid once: search inside every fic, merge a series into one EPUB, a tidy ZIP of the whole library and a catalog as CSV. Get Pro on Gumroad or see what is free.
Questions
Can you read AO3 offline?
Yes, if you downloaded the fics first. Open the EPUB or HTML files in Ficshelf and read them in your browser.
How do I read AO3 offline on an iPhone?
Save the EPUB or HTML files to the Files app, open Ficshelf in Safari, press Choose files and pick them. Your place is kept in the browser.
Is there an AO3 offline app?
Ficshelf is a web page, not an app: nothing to install. After the first visit it opens without a connection.
Does it work in airplane mode?
Yes after the page has loaded once. Reading, filtering and saving an EPUB need no connection.
