What the export has to contain
A Memories export holds your photos and videos plus a memories list that describes them. The photo files carry no capture date inside, so a gallery shows the download day. The guide Why your Snapchat Memories show the wrong date explains this with an example. The list is what holds the real date, in UTC, and the location when Snapchat saved a place.
The list is json/memories_history.json. If you did not ask for JSON, the export has html/memories_history.html instead, and Photo Date Fixer reads that as well. A photo with no entry in the list still gets its time from its ZIP entry, but there is no location to write.
The checklist, from request to fixed copies
- Log in to your account on accounts.snapchat.com and click “My Data”. In the Snapchat app, you can reach the same page from Settings: tap the gear icon at the top of your Profile, then select “My Data”.
- Choose what to include, and make sure Memories is part of it. Snap's page describes two ways: select the data categories you want, or, for Memories alone, toggle “Export your Memories” to on under “Select data to include” and click “Request Only Memories”. Either way, check the result after the download, as described further down.
- Look for a JSON option. Snap's page does not mention a choice of file format, so the request page may word it differently or not offer it. If it offers JSON files, switch that on. If not, you get the HTML version of the memories list, which the fixer also reads.
- Pick the dates to cover, or toggle the date range off to receive all data. Take everything unless you have a reason not to, because the fixer can only repair what the export contains.
- Confirm the email address where you want to be notified and click “Submit” at the bottom of the page. Snap says data download requests cannot be canceled, so check the address first.
- Wait for the email. Snap says it will send you an email with a link once your data is ready to download, and that it strives to deliver data within 7 days, but large downloads can take longer.
- Download every part. Select “See exports”, then “Download”. Snap's page says the download arrives as a zip file. An export can be split into several numbered parts, named like
mydata~1739000000000.zipandmydata~1739000000000-2.zip, and the fixer needs all of them. Snap's page does not say how long the link works, so download all the parts as soon as the email arrives. If you run into problems, Snap suggests trying a computer rather than a mobile device, or a different browser. - Keep the ZIP files zipped. Snap's page also describes extracting the folder and opening index.html to download Memories one by one or all at once. You can skip that, because the fixer reads the ZIP files directly.
- Add every part to the fixer in one go. It reads them on your device and uploads nothing, which you can check yourself with the steps in How we check that nothing is uploaded. It shows the first five photos before it writes anything, and then writes the fixed copies.

What to check after the download
The photos and videos are spread over the parts of your export, and the memories list sits in the first part, the file without -2 in its name, so the fixer needs the whole set. Plan for free space of about the size of your export, and keep the original ZIP files until you have checked the results. The fixer does not change them. It writes new copies.
After you add the files, the screen headed “Here is what we found” counts the photos and videos, the files that matched exactly or within the same 2-second window, the files with no entry in the memories list and the list entries with no file. A table below it shows the first five photos with the Snapchat time in UTC, the local time that will be written and the location, before anything is written. Compare a few with photos you remember. If the memories without a location are all off by the same amount, change the time zone for them on that screen.
- If the fixer cannot find memories_history.json or memories_history.html, add the first ZIP of your export, the one without -2 in its name.
- If it says the ZIPs list memories but contain no photos or videos, request a new export with Memories included, then add every part.
- Some entries without a file are normal, for example My Eyes Only items. A long run of them can mean a part is missing. Check the numbers in your file names: if you have -2 and -4 but no -3, download the missing part.
What Snap says about the January 2027 archive
Snap's help page on Memories storage says that starting in January 2027, Memories that are more than one year old and are not part of your oldest 5GB of Memories will be archived and remain stored on Snapchat. Archived Memories will appear as thumbnails in the app, and opening, editing or sharing them takes a storage upgrade. The page also says no Memories will be archived before January 2027, with advance notice in the app, and that Snapchat will not automatically delete your Memories because you do not upgrade. It lists downloading your Memories to access them outside the app as one of your options.
The wait for the export is the part you can plan for, so request it early and download every part the day the email arrives.
