Discord put you in the wrong age group: how to check it and fix it
Since September 23, 2026 Discord puts every account in an adult, teen or unconfirmed age group, mostly through a model that estimates age from how the account is used. Discord says "a small percent of accounts will land in the wrong group". If you are 18 or older and were placed in the teen group, this is how to check it and fix it the official way.
Check your age group
Open Discord and go to User Settings > Account Status. Your age group is there, with a Confirm Age button when it can be changed. On a phone you need app version 343.0 or later to see it, according to Discord's help article. Your age group is not shown on your profile or to other members.
On September 23, 2026 Discord reported a bug that showed different groups on different devices (unconfirmed on an older app, blocked from age-restricted servers on some phones) and said it was fixed: close and reopen the app before you do anything else.
What changes in the teen group
- Age-restricted servers and channels are blocked.
- Message requests from people who are not your friends go to a separate inbox.
- Sensitive content filters stay on, and you get an alert when you accept a friend request from someone you share no friends with.

The ways to confirm your age group
Discord offers these on the Confirm Your Age Group screen. Which ones you see depends on your region and device.
| Method | What Discord says happens |
|---|---|
| Apple App Store | The App Store shares your age range; your exact birthday is not shared. |
| Google Play Store | Google Play shares your age range; your exact birthday is not shared. |
| Credit card | k-ID checks that you own a credit card, through Stripe. A temporary charge under $0.50 may be made and refunded within 14 business days. Debit and prepaid cards are not accepted. |
| Google Wallet | A passport stored in Google Wallet; only the age group and issuing country are shared. Passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US. |
| Video selfie | Your face is analysed on your device to estimate age; Discord says nothing leaves the device. |
| ID scan | A photo of a government ID and a selfie, checked by k-ID and deleted once your age is confirmed. |
| AgeKey | A reusable age passkey made once through k-ID, usable with other services too. |
When a method finishes, Discord's official account sends you a DM with the result. Discord says it only receives an age signal from these vendors, never the image, ID or card details. A 2025 breach at a third-party vendor Discord used for age appeals exposed ID photos and selfies of about 70,000 users, as TechCrunch reported, so read what each method shares before you pick one.
If it is still wrong
- Go back to Account Status and press Retry to use a different method. Discord may limit how often each method can be tried; one that is missing now may come back later.
- Discord may ask for a second method when it needs more confidence.
- If the account was banned after being judged under the minimum age for your region, Discord's help article links to an appeal.
Discord never asks you to confirm your age by email or text. A message like that is not from Discord.
What your data package shows about it
Account/user.json in your data package keeps the trail: inferred_age_group (the model's decision), and under age_assurance each check with its vendor, method, time and estimated_age_group. Seeing the model said Teen and a later check said Adult tells you the fix went through; seeing only the model's Teen tells you no check was recorded. What each field means
If you are under 18, the teen group is the right one, and these steps will not change it.
Open your package to see which model or check set your age group, and when. Nothing is uploaded.
Open your package in AgelensAgelens Pro, $8 paid once: every conversation in one ZIP, as pages that open offline, text files and one spreadsheet, with your age report. Get Pro on Gumroad or see what is free.
Questions
How do I check my age group on Discord?
User Settings > Account Status. On a phone, update the app to version 343.0 or later if you do not see it.
Why did Discord put me in the teen group?
Discord estimates age from account signals such as account age, devices and how the account is used, not from your messages, and says a small share of accounts land in the wrong group. Your data package shows whether the model (inferred_age_group) or a check (estimated_age_group) set it.
Can I fix it without a face scan or ID?
Discord lists an app store age range (Apple or Google), a credit card check and a passport in Google Wallet among the methods; which ones you see depends on your region and device.
How long until my age group changes?
Discord sends a DM with the result when the method finishes, and the new group shows at Account Status. Close and reopen the app if another device still shows the old group.
