First, make the bookmarks file
- Open Stashback and choose your
collectionsSQLitefile (see where it is). - Check the list: every collection is a tab, with its pages, notes and pictures.
- Click "Save the bookmarks file". You get
edge-collections-bookmarks-and today's date, ending in .html.
Inside, everything sits in one folder called "Edge Collections", with one folder per collection. Pages you had outside any collection go into "Not in a collection".
Import it into Chrome
Google's steps: open Chrome, select More at the top right, then "Bookmarks and lists", then "Import bookmarks and settings". Select "Choose file", pick the file and select Open, then Done (Import bookmarks & settings).
Import it into Firefox
Mozilla's steps: open the Library window (menu, Bookmarks, "Manage bookmarks"), click "Import and Backup" in its toolbar and choose "Import Bookmarks from HTML...", then pick the file and click Open. Mozilla notes that the bookmarks are added to the ones you have, in the Bookmarks Menu folder (Import Bookmarks from an HTML file).
Import it into Safari on a Mac
Apple's Safari guide says Safari can "import bookmarks that were exported in HTML format from Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and some other web browsers", and that imported bookmarks appear after your existing ones (Import bookmarks and history from another browser). The import is in Safari's File menu, under Import From.
Keep them in Edge, as Favorites
Staying with Edge? Microsoft's steps for importing a file: Settings, Profiles, "Import browser data", then in "Import from" select "Favorites or bookmarks HTML file", choose the file and open it (Import your favorites and passwords in Microsoft Edge). You get the same folders that Edge's own "Move to Favorites" made, one per collection, even if your Edge no longer offers that button.
What comes across, and what does not
| From Collections | In the bookmarks file |
|---|---|
| Collection names | Yes, as folders |
| Page titles and addresses | Yes, in your saved order |
| Date a page was added | Yes, where Edge kept it |
| Notes and clipped text | No: browsers keep no notes on bookmarks. Save the spreadsheet or the printout as well. |
| Pictures | No: shown on Stashback and kept in the printout (Print or save as PDF). |
Microsoft's own "Move to Favorites" made the same choice: only saved web pages moved, and "Images, notes, and other non-page items aren't included" (Organize your ideas with Collections in Microsoft Edge).
Open your Collections file
Choose the collectionsSQLite file from your Edge profile folder: every collection appears with its pages, notes and pictures, and you can save it all as a bookmarks file or a spreadsheet. Free, and nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Can I import Edge Collections into Chrome directly?
Not directly: Chrome imports bookmarks, not Collections. Turn your Collections file into a bookmarks HTML file on Stashback first, then use Chrome's "Import bookmarks and settings".
Will importing twice make duplicates?
Yes. Browsers add imported bookmarks to the ones you have, so import the file once, or delete the first "Edge Collections" folder before importing again.
Where do my notes go?
Bookmarks cannot hold notes, so Stashback puts them in the spreadsheet (one row per item, with the note beside the page) and in the printout.
