The paths
| System | Folder |
|---|---|
| Windows, first profile | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Collections |
| Windows, other profiles | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Profile 1\Collections (then Profile 2, Profile 3 and so on) |
| Mac | ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/Default/Collections |
| Linux | ~/.config/microsoft-edge/Default/Collections |
The Windows path is the one listed in the forensics map Windows_EdgeBrowser_Collections; the Mac and Linux paths are the ones given by the open-source export-edge-collections-tool (paths for Windows, Mac and Linux). On Windows, %LOCALAPPDATA% is a shortcut to your own AppData\Local folder, so you do not need to show hidden folders to get there.
Open it on Stashback, step by step
- Go to Stashback and click "Choose the file".
- On Windows, click the address bar at the top of the Open window, paste the folder path and press Enter. On a Mac, press Command, Shift and G, paste the path and press Return.
- Pick collectionsSQLite and click Open. Your collections appear on the page; nothing is uploaded.
- Click "Save the bookmarks file" to keep every page, or "Save as a spreadsheet" to keep the notes too.
Two files in the folder
You will usually see collectionsSQLite and collectionsSQLite-journal. The first is the database. The second is SQLite's rollback journal, a helper file that holds unfinished changes while a program writes; SQLite deletes or empties it when the change is done (Temporary files used by SQLite (rollback journals)). It is normally 0 bytes. Open the first one.
Which profile is which?
If you had more than one Edge profile, each has its own folder and its own collections. In Edge, type edge://version in the address bar: the line "Profile path" ends with the folder name of the profile you are using (Default, Profile 1 and so on). On Stashback, use "Add another profile's file" to open several files together; each keeps its own label in the list and in the bookmarks file.
The folder is missing, or the file is empty
- Another profile. Look in the Profile 1, Profile 2 folders next to Default.
- Kept online. If you used Edge with a personal Microsoft account, your collections may live online; Microsoft says personal accounts can see them at bing.com/saves (Organize your ideas with Collections in Microsoft Edge). See Bing Saves and personal accounts.
- Another computer. The file holds what Edge kept on the computer it is on. If you mostly used Collections on a different PC, open the file there.
- Moved to Favorites. If you accepted Edge's "Move to Favorites", the pages are folders in your Favorites now.
Before anything else, close Edge and copy the whole Collections folder to your desktop. Work on the copy. Microsoft has not said whether a later update will clear the old data.
Open your Collections file
Choose the collectionsSQLite file from your Edge profile folder: every collection appears with its pages, notes and pictures, and you can save it all as a bookmarks file or a spreadsheet. Free, and nothing is uploaded.
Questions
What is collectionsSQLite?
It is the database Microsoft Edge used for Collections: a SQLite file inside each Edge profile folder, with tables for your collections, the items in them, notes and website icons.
Can I open collectionsSQLite without installing anything?
Yes. Stashback reads it in your browser and shows every collection with its pages, notes and pictures. The file is not uploaded.
Where is the Edge profile folder on Windows?
In %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data. The first profile is called Default and the others Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on.
