What you are moving
There are two things, and they move separately. The site is the pages, pictures and files; Rehoused makes them into a folder of HTML pages, pictures and one stylesheet that keeps your Weebly file names (index.html, about.html and so on). The domain is the address people type; it is registered somewhere, and Weebly may be that somewhere.
Three free places to put the folder
| Host | How you upload | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Netlify | Drag the folder onto app.netlify.com/drop. Unzip first: Netlify says to unzip a project ZIP and drop the folder. | Netlify's docs describe Drop as "no account required" and recommend being logged in to the team that should own the site (Deploy overview, drag and drop). |
| Cloudflare Pages | Workers & Pages, Create application, Get started, "Drag and drop your files". The dashboard takes a folder or a ZIP. | Drag and drop is limited to 1,000 files and 25 MiB per file (Pages, Direct Upload). A site with many pictures can pass that; Wrangler allows 20,000 files. |
| GitHub Pages | Put the files in a repository, open Settings, then Pages, and choose the branch and folder. | Repositories on a free account must be public. Changes can take up to 10 minutes. Add an empty .nojekyll file so GitHub publishes your files as they are (Creating a GitHub Pages site). |
Pick one and keep the clean site's ZIP as your backup. All three give you an address of their own to test with before you point your domain at it.
Moving your domain away from Weebly
Weebly's notice gives the steps, and they hold whether you plan to keep the domain at Weebly or not (Upcoming Changes to Weebly’s Global Operations):
- In your Weebly dashboard go to Websites, then Domains, click Manage and then Manage Domain on the domain you are moving.
- Switch off the Registrar Lock to get the EPP authorization code. Disabling the lock also switches off Whois privacy, so set it up again with your new registrar.
- Give the code to the new registrar, which finishes the transfer.
Three rules from the same page, and one of them catches people out:
- A domain cannot be transferred within 60 days of its registration date. That is an ICANN rule, not a Weebly one.
- Changing the registrant contact details (email, phone, first or last name) starts a 60-day registrar lock. Wait until after the transfer to update them.
- Country-code domains such as .co.uk or .de work differently. If you bought one through Weebly, the notice says to ask Weebly's support team.
You do not have to transfer at all. The notice also suggests "keeping your domain name with Weebly and setting it up to work with another host", which means changing its DNS records to point at the new host. That only works while you can log in to Weebly, so do it before December 26.
Pointing your domain at the new host
Each host explains its own records: Cloudflare Pages needs the domain's nameservers at Cloudflare for a bare domain such as example.com, while a subdomain only needs a CNAME record (Pages, Custom domains). GitHub Pages uses A, ALIAS or ANAME records for the bare domain and a CNAME for www, and advises setting up both (About custom domains and GitHub Pages). Netlify's steps are in its custom domains page.
WordPress, Squarespace and Wix
Rehoused writes a static site, not an import file, so it does not load into a site builder as it is. Squarespace's import help lists WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr for pages and posts, and Weebly is not on that list; it also cannot import a previous site's layout, design or fonts (Importing content from WordPress, Blogger, or Tumblr). On a builder, the clean pages give you the text and pictures to copy into new pages, and the moving report lists what is left to do.
After the move
- Open the moving report from Rehoused. It lists each picture, file and menu link the archive could not bring.
- Click every menu link on the new address. Pages keep their Weebly file names, so old links such as
/about.htmlstill work once the domain points to the new host. - Add the address you used on Weebly to Rehoused's "Your site's address" box before saving, so the sitemap carries the right addresses.
Open your Weebly archive
Choose the archive ZIP Weebly emailed you: the same pages come back as a clean website with your pictures in place, and a report lists what the archive could not bring. Free, and nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Can I move my Weebly site to another host for free?
Yes. Netlify, Cloudflare Pages and GitHub Pages all serve a folder of static files at no charge on their free plans. Cloudflare limits drag and drop to 1,000 files, and GitHub requires a public repository on a free account.
How do I move my Weebly domain?
In the Weebly dashboard go to Websites, Domains, Manage, Manage Domain, switch off the Registrar Lock to get the EPP code, and give the code to your new registrar. A domain cannot move within 60 days of registration.
Is there a Weebly importer for WordPress or Squarespace?
Squarespace's import help lists WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr, not Weebly. Rehoused writes a plain static site, so you can host it as it is or copy its text and pictures into a builder.
