Get the archive, step by step
This is Weebly's own method from its page "Back Up Your Site" (Back Up Your Site):
- Log in to Weebly and open your site in the editor.
- Go to Settings, then General, and scroll down to the Archive section.
- Enter your email address in the field and choose Email Archive. Weebly says "You’ll receive an email shortly with a link to download the archive as a ZIP file."
- Save the ZIP. Do not unzip it if you want to open it in Rehoused; the tool reads the ZIP as it is, and also takes the unzipped folder.
Weebly's notice about the closure gives the same route in other words: "Website > Edit Site > Settings > Archive" for one site's data (Upcoming Changes to Weebly’s Global Operations). Repeat the steps for every site in your account.
That help page is written for Weebly's classic site editor. We found no matching archive page for the newer editor, so if you do not see Archive under Settings, General, use the account download below and ask Weebly's support team.
The data of the whole account
The notice also points to Account Settings, My Data, Download My Data for "your site content and data". Weebly's help does not describe what that download holds, so we have not tested it. If it contains site archives as ZIP files, Rehoused opens them and asks which site you want. After you have your data, the notice says you can ask Weebly to erase it and forget your account.
What is in the archive, and what is not
In the archives we opened, the ZIP holds one HTML file for each page (the home page is index.html), a files folder with the theme's stylesheet, and an uploads folder with your pictures and files. Weebly's page adds two limits:
- "Blog and store pages aren't included in the export as they rely directly on our database."
- "some components of your site may not work correctly outside of the Weebly editor, like the Contact Form and Slideshow elements."
Weebly also says you cannot put the archive back: "it isn't possible to import this file back into Weebly". It is an offline copy "for safe-keeping or to recreate the site at another host".
The pages in the archive still point at Weebly. In all three public archives we opened, they load Weebly's base stylesheet and scripts from its own servers (editmysite.com), and some background pictures are kept there too. A page opened straight from the ZIP can look right today and break once those servers stop answering. That is the problem Rehoused solves: it writes the same pages again without any Weebly address.
Do the download today, and open the file once to see that it is a real ZIP with your pages inside. A link in an email that nobody opens until January is how people lose sites.
If the archive does not come
- Check the spam folder and wait a few minutes: Weebly says the email arrives "shortly".
- Ask for it again, with the email address of your Weebly account.
- If the Archive box is missing or does nothing, write to Weebly's support team. The notice names support for "exporting your data".
Open your Weebly archive
Choose the archive ZIP Weebly emailed you: the same pages come back as a clean website with your pictures in place, and a report lists what the archive could not bring. Free, and nothing is uploaded.
Questions
How do I download my Weebly website?
In the Weebly editor go to Settings, then General, and scroll to Archive. Enter your email address and choose Email Archive. Weebly emails a link to a ZIP file of the site.
Does the Weebly archive include my blog or store?
No. Weebly says blog and store pages are not included in the export because they rely directly on its database.
Can I upload the Weebly archive back to Weebly?
No. Weebly says it is not possible to import the archive back into Weebly. It is meant as an offline backup or to recreate the site at another host.
