Yahoo Notepad is being discontinued: what to do before January 15, 2027

Yahoo Notepad will be retired on January 15, 2027, and Yahoo's help page says every download of your notes has to happen before that date. Here is what Yahoo says, and a short checklist so nothing you wrote there is lost.

What Yahoo says

Yahoo's help page about the shutdown is short. In Yahoo's own words:

So Notepad is closing and Yahoo Mail is not. This page follows Yahoo's help page (Yahoo Notepad to be discontinued) rather than news reports, and we update it when that page changes.

Your checklist before January 15

  1. Ask Yahoo for the download. Sign in to Yahoo Mail on a computer, go to the download manager (Yahoo links it to mail.yahoo.com/getmydata), click Download under "Calendar and Notepad", confirm the email address and click OK.
  2. Save the file as soon as the email arrives. Download it to your computer and keep the original. Yahoo's page on data downloads says its downloads are in JSON and "might be hard to read at a glance" (View and manage data associated with your account).
  3. Open it and check it. Open the file on Lastleaf: it lists every note with its notebook and dates, so you can see that the notes you care about are there.
  4. Save a copy you can read anywhere. Save all notes as one text file, and keep it in two places, for example on your computer and in an email to yourself.
  5. Move the notes you use every day into a notes app you already have. See where to move your Yahoo Notepad notes.
  6. Passwords in Notepad? The text file holds them in plain text. Keep it somewhere private, or move those notes into a password manager.

Deleted notes cannot be brought back. Yahoo says deleted Notepad notes "don't move to your Trash folder and can't be recovered" (Add, edit, or delete notes in Yahoo Notepad). The download holds the notes Notepad still has.

What happens after January 15, 2027

Yahoo's page gives the date and says downloads must happen before it. It does not describe anything after that date, so plan on Notepad and its download no longer being there. If you have already saved the file, it keeps working: Lastleaf opens it in your browser at any time, with or without a Yahoo account.

Notes on an iPhone

If the notes you are worried about are the ones you see in the Notes app on an iPhone, they may be a different thing from Notepad. Read Yahoo notes on an iPhone before you change any settings.

Open your Notepad file

Got the file from Yahoo's email? Open it in your browser, read every note it holds with its notebook and dates, and save them all as one text file. Built for the export Yahoo describes and tested on sample files. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

Questions

Is Yahoo Mail closing too?

No. Yahoo says the end of Notepad "will not affect how Yahoo Mail works going forward."

What is the last day to download Yahoo Notepad notes?

Yahoo says Notepad will be completely retired by January 15, 2027, and that every download has to take place before that date. Do it well before, because the email with the file can take time to arrive.

Will Yahoo move my notes to another app for me?

Yahoo's Notepad page describes only the download. It names no app that the notes move to, so moving them is up to you.
