Two different things called notes
| Question | Notes app on the iPhone, Yahoo account | Yahoo Notepad |
|---|---|---|
| Where you wrote them | In Apple's Notes app, in the Yahoo account section (Add or remove accounts in Notes on iPhone) | In Yahoo Mail, with the Notepad icon (Add, edit, or delete notes in Yahoo Notepad) |
| Where Yahoo keeps them | A folder called "Notes" in Yahoo Mail (Sync Apple Notes with Yahoo Mail) | Notepad's notebooks |
| Closing on January 15, 2027 | Yahoo has not said | Yes (Yahoo Notepad to be discontinued) |
Not verified: whether the Notes folder and Notepad hold the same notes, and whether the end of Notepad affects the Notes folder. Yahoo's help pages describe them separately and do not say either way (checked October 27, 2026). Until Yahoo does, keep a copy of both.
The Notes folder in Yahoo Mail
Yahoo's help page on Apple Notes says that when you add Yahoo Mail to an iPhone and leave "Notes" on, "a 'Notes' folder is created in your Yahoo Mail account". It also says:
- "This is a one-way sync from your iOS device to Yahoo."
- "The notes are not editable from Yahoo Mail."
- "If you add notes to the 'Notes' folder in Yahoo Mail, you won't see them in your iOS device's Notes app."
So if the Notes folder in Yahoo Mail is missing, it may never have been made: Yahoo says it appears after at least one note syncs from the iPhone (Sync Apple Notes with Yahoo Mail).
Why Yahoo notes disappear from an iPhone
Apple's iPhone guide says that when you remove or delete an account, or turn off Notes for it, "the notes in that account no longer appear on your iPhone". Apple adds that the notes remain in the internet account and on other devices you had already set up (Add or remove accounts in Notes on iPhone). To check, go to Settings, Apps, Notes, Notes Accounts: see whether your Yahoo account is listed, and whether Notes is on for it. Turning Notes back on for that account brings its notes back into view.
Apple also says some Notes features are not available in accounts other than iCloud and On My iPhone, so notes kept in a Yahoo account can behave differently from your iCloud notes.
Keep those notes in iCloud
To keep notes from the Yahoo account in iCloud, the steps we can stand behind are simple: open each note, copy its text and paste it into a new note in the iCloud section of the Notes app. Apple's guide explains how to turn on iCloud for Notes (Settings, your name, iCloud, See All, Notes). We could not confirm on Apple's pages a way to move many notes between accounts at once, so we do not describe one here.
Can you recover Yahoo notes?
- Notepad notes you deleted: no. Yahoo says deleted Notepad notes "can't be recovered" (Add, edit, or delete notes in Yahoo Notepad). Notes that were not deleted are in the Notepad download until January 15, 2027; open it on Lastleaf.
- iCloud notes you deleted: Apple says they stay in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days (Delete and recover notes on iCloud.com). Apple's pages do not say the same for notes kept in a Yahoo account, so do not count on it.
- Notes that vanished after an account was removed or Notes turned off: per Apple, they stay in the account; turn Notes back on for it.
Open your Notepad file
Got the file from Yahoo's email? Open it in your browser, read every note it holds with its notebook and dates, and save them all as one text file. Built for the export Yahoo describes and tested on sample files. Free, and nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Why did my Yahoo notes disappear from my iPhone?
Apple says notes in an account stop appearing on the iPhone when the account is removed or Notes is turned off for it, and that they stay in the account. Check Settings, Apps, Notes, Notes Accounts.
Is the Notes folder in Yahoo Mail the same as Yahoo Notepad?
Yahoo's help pages describe them separately: the Notes folder holds notes synced one way from an iPhone, Notepad is opened with its own icon in Yahoo Mail. Yahoo has not said whether they share data, so we could not verify it.
How do I recover deleted Yahoo Notepad notes?
You cannot. Yahoo says deleted Notepad notes do not go to the Trash and cannot be recovered. Notes that were not deleted are in the Notepad download until January 15, 2027.
