When the Character.AI export isn’t working
Most export problems are one of a few: the email hasn’t come yet, the link has expired, the ZIP won’t take the password, or the file opens but is unreadable. Find your step below.
Have the ZIP? Open it in Chatbound: it opens the locked file with your email address, lists every chat and lets you search and save them. Nothing is uploaded.
Open your exportThe export email hasn’t arrived
Character.AI’s help centre says an export “may take 3-4 weeks to complete”, and the email goes to the address on your account. So a request from today should arrive in three to four weeks. Meanwhile:
- Check your spam and promotions folders for a message from
accounts@character.aiwith the subject “Character AI User Data Export”. - Check the inbox of the email address your account uses, which may not be your main one (see which address).
- Asking again creates another request. Nothing in the help centre says it speeds up the first one.
- If more than four weeks have passed, write to Character.AI support with the date you asked.
The date calculator on the main page shows the window for your request date.
The download link has expired
The link works for 7 days from the time the email is sent. After that, ask for a new export in your settings: Profile, Settings, Legal & Privacy, Export Data in the app, or Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export Data on the web. When the next email arrives, download the ZIP the same day and keep a copy in a second place.
The ZIP won’t open or is “invalid”
- It asks for a password: it’s your account’s email address in lowercase. Details on the password page.
- Windows says the file is invalid, or the password never works: the built-in tool can’t open every kind of locked ZIP. Use 7-Zip, or open it in Chatbound, which reads both kinds.
- The file is much smaller than expected, or tools say it is damaged: the download probably stopped early. Download it again while the link works. Chatbound tells you when the end of a ZIP is missing.
- On a phone nothing happens: most built-in file apps can’t unzip locked files. Choose the ZIP in Chatbound instead.
The files open but look like code
That’s normal: the export is JSON, a format for programs. message.json holds every message from every chat in one list, mixed together, with the text under raw_content. What’s in the export explains each field. Chatbound groups the messages back into chats.
The JSON file is too big to open
Long histories make message.json hundreds of megabytes. Notepad, many online JSON viewers and some editors freeze on that. Chatbound reads the file in pieces in a background worker: in our tests a 106 MB locked ZIP with 288 MB of messages opened in 10 to 16 seconds on a laptop.
The messages are out of order or mixed up
The list isn’t grouped by conversation. Sort by create_time within each chat_id to rebuild a chat. Chatbound does this when it opens the file.
I can’t tell who said what
The export has no field for the sender of a message or for the character of a chat. Any tool that shows names is guessing. Chatbound shows the messages in time order without names, and marks a chat when it starts with the exact greeting of a character you created. When you move a chat to another app, which needs a name on every message, you choose how the turns are laid out and check it in a preview first.
Some chats seem to be missing
The hands-on account of the export reports that very long chats can come out incomplete, and chats deleted before the request aren’t included. Search for a sentence you remember from the missing chat. If it isn’t there, it isn’t in the file. While the site is still up, copying an important chat by hand is a reasonable backup.
