The short version

  • Your export is opened by this page inside your browser. We never receive your file, your chats, your characters or your email address.
  • The page sets no cookies and shows no ads.
  • Visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and collects no personal data.
  • If you buy Pro, your licence key is checked with Gumroad when you paste it.

Your export file

When you drop or choose a file, the page hands it to a worker script in the same browser tab. The worker reads it from your device, opens it with the email address you type, and keeps the chats in the tab’s memory while it is open. Closing the file or the tab clears them. No part of the file, and nothing read from it, is sent over the network. The files you save (HTML, text, Markdown, the book, the EPUB, the print layout for PDF, character cards, chat files and the ZIP of them) are made in your browser and go straight to your downloads. A picture you choose for a character card is read the same way, on your device.

The page’s security policy tells your browser to allow only two connections: Gumroad’s licence check and Cloudflare’s visit counter. The worker that reads your file has no network code. How to check that nothing is uploaded shows how to confirm this in your browser.

The email address you type

Character.AI locks the export with your email address. You type it so the page can open the file. It stays in the tab’s memory for that purpose, is never stored and is never sent anywhere.

What your browser keeps

  • Names you give chats. If you rename a chat, the name is saved in this browser’s local storage under chatbound:names, next to the chat’s id from the export, so the name is there next time. It holds only the names you typed.
  • Names you give characters. When you type a character’s name in the Move to another app tab, it is saved under chatbound:characters, next to an id made from the character’s greeting, so it is there next time.
  • Your free character. The free version converts one character. Which one is saved under chatbound:free-character: its id and its name.
  • Your Pro licence. After a key is accepted, the key and the purchase email that Gumroad returns are saved in local storage under peak-license:chatbound, so Pro stays on. The key is checked with Gumroad again about once a week.

You can remove all of these by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.

Gumroad

Payment for Pro happens on Gumroad, which handles your card and receipt under its own privacy policy. When you paste a licence key, the page sends the key and the product id to Gumroad’s licence API to check it. Nothing from your export is included.

Visit counting and hosting

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page visits with a small script from static.cloudflareinsights.com. It sets no cookies and records the page address, the referring site, the browser and country and how fast the page loaded, without identifying you. The site is hosted by Vercel, which processes the technical data of each page request (such as your IP address) to serve and protect the site.

Children

Chatbound collects no personal information from anyone, of any age.
