Import your Character.AI characters into Sakura.fm
Sakura.fm’s character creator has an Import Character button that reads character cards, including Character Card V2 files as PNG or JSON. Chatbound makes the card from your Character.AI data export. Sakura.fm then needs two fields that Character.AI doesn’t have, Persona and Scenario, and it can’t import your old chats.
Have your export? Open it in Chatbound and use the Move to another app tab. It makes the card on your device, from the file, without the Character.AI website. One character is free.
Open your exportStep by step
- Open Chatbound and drop the export ZIP from the Character.AI email. When it asks, type the email address of your Character.AI account: that is the ZIP’s password.
- Open the Move to another app tab and choose the character. Characters your account created come with their whole definition. For a character made by someone else, type the name you knew it by.
- Click Save the card (PNG), or Card as JSON. The PNG also gives the character its picture.
- On Sakura.fm, open the page for creating a character.
- Click Import Character. The box says “Import a JSON or image file here.”
- Choose the card, or paste the JSON into the text box, and click Submit. Name, Description and First Message fill in, and a PNG card sets the picture.
- Write a Persona and a Scenario. Sakura.fm asks for at least 3 characters in each, and Character.AI has no such fields to copy.
- Choose who can see the character and save it.
Where each field lands
| In your Character.AI export | In Sakura.fm |
|---|---|
| Name | Name (Sakura.fm allows 3 to 50 characters) |
| Description | Description |
| Greeting | First Message |
| Definition | Example conversation, only where it is written as lines starting with {{char}}: and {{user}}: |
| Tagline | Not imported |
| Nothing (Character.AI has no such fields) | Persona and Scenario: you write them |
If the character’s definition is written as plain description, Sakura.fm leaves the example conversation empty. That text is still useful: paste it into Persona.
Characters you didn’t create
The export only defines the characters your account made. For one made by someone else, the card holds the name you type and its greeting, and Sakura.fm needs a Description as well as Persona and Scenario. Type a description in Chatbound before saving the card, or write all three in Sakura.fm.
Your old chats
We found no way to import chat history into Sakura.fm: its Import Character box takes characters only. Keep the chats readable in Chatbound, which searches them and saves any chat as HTML, text or Markdown, or move them to SillyTavern or Perchance, which import chat files.

Questions
Can I import Character.AI chats into Sakura.fm?
No. Sakura.fm’s import takes characters only, so a moved character starts a new chat. SillyTavern and Perchance can import the chat files Chatbound makes.
Why won’t Sakura.fm save the imported character?
Usually because Persona or Scenario is empty: Sakura.fm asks for at least 3 characters in each, and Character.AI has no such fields. A name shorter than 3 characters is refused too.
PNG or JSON?
Either works. The PNG also sets the character’s picture; with JSON you can paste the text into the box instead of choosing a file.
Is Chatbound made by Sakura.fm or Character.AI?
No. Chatbound is an independent tool by Peak Apps Studio. It is not affiliated with Character Technologies, Janitor AI, SillyTavern or Sakura.fm.
