Import your Character.AI characters into Janitor AI
Janitor AI can’t open the Character.AI export, but it does import a character card: a PNG picture with the character’s details stored inside it. Chatbound makes that card from your export, on your device. You choose it as the character’s image in Janitor AI’s creator, and Janitor offers to fill in the fields. Old chats can’t be imported into Janitor AI; further down is what you can do with them.
Have your export? Open it in Chatbound and use the Move to another app tab. It makes the card on your device, from the file, without the Character.AI website. One character is free.
Open your exportWhat you need
- Your Character.AI data export: the ZIP from the email Character.AI sends. How to ask for it, and its password.
- A Janitor AI account.
- A browser on a computer or phone. Nothing is installed, and no extension is needed.
Step by step
- Open Chatbound and drop the export ZIP from the Character.AI email. When it asks, type the email address of your Character.AI account: that is the ZIP’s password.
- Open the Move to another app tab and choose the character. Characters your account created come with their whole definition. For a character made by someone else, type the name you knew it by.
- Click Save the card (PNG). The picture is a plain lettered one, because the export has no character pictures; to use your own, click Use my own picture first.
- In Janitor AI, click Create a Character.
- In the Image field, choose the PNG you saved. The help text under that field says you can “import Tavern PNG file” there.
- A box titled Character information detected asks “Would you like to import this image’s information?” and warns that this replaces all fields of the character. Click YES.
- Check the fields against the table below. Janitor AI requires a Personality and at least one Initial message.
- Choose Private or Public, then click Create character. Janitor AI may ask you to complete a security check before it saves.
Where each field lands
| In your Character.AI export | On the card | In Janitor AI |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Name | Name |
| Description | Description | Personality |
| Greeting | First message | Initial messages |
| Definition | Example messages | Example dialogs |
| Tagline | Creator’s notes | Not imported. Copy it into Bio by hand if you want it shown. |
| Nothing (Character.AI has no such fields) | Personality and scenario, empty | Bio and Scenario stay empty |
| No picture | The card’s picture | The character’s image |
Janitor AI reads the card’s original, older set of fields first. In that set it puts the card’s description into Personality, the field it sends to the AI, which is where a Character.AI description belongs. Chatbound writes those older fields next to the Character Card V2 ones for this reason, with the same text in both.
A Character.AI definition often holds sample dialogue, so it goes to Example dialogs. If yours is mostly a description of the character, move it into Personality after the import.
Characters you didn’t create
The export only defines the characters your account made. For a character someone else made, it holds just your chats with it, and no field even says which character a chat was with. Chatbound groups the chats that open with the same greeting, and the card it makes holds the name you type and that greeting as the initial message.
Janitor AI won’t save the character without a Personality, so write a few lines: who the character is and how they talk. You can type it in Chatbound before saving the card, or in Janitor AI after the import. Before rebuilding someone else’s character, search Janitor AI for it: the same help text suggests looking for an existing character before importing a new one. Don’t publish another person’s character as your own.
What about your old chats?
Janitor AI has no way to import chat history. Its character creator imports from the image only, and we found no import option for chats in its interface. What you can do:
- Keep them readable. Chatbound shows every chat and searches across all of them, and saves any chat as HTML, text or Markdown for free.
- Carry the story over in a summary. Janitor AI chats have a Chat Memory, which it describes as a summary “included into the prompt as long-term memory”. Write a few lines about where your story stands: names, places, what has happened. Pasting whole chats in would crowd out the rest of the prompt.
- Keep chatting with the full history somewhere that imports it. SillyTavern and Perchance import both the card and the chat files Chatbound makes.
Limits to know
- Janitor AI takes images up to 10 MB in PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, BMP or AVIF, but only a PNG carries the card. Chatbound’s cards are PNGs well under that size, including when you use your own picture (it is resized to 1024 pixels on the long side).
- On a public character, a new image can take up to 30 seconds to verify, and if it doesn’t pass Janitor AI’s automated moderation, the character isn’t updated.
- The export has no character pictures, lorebooks or alternate greetings, so none come over.

Questions
Can I import a Character.AI chat into Janitor AI?
No. Janitor AI has no chat import, so a moved character starts a new chat. Keep the old chats readable in Chatbound, put a short summary of the story in the chat’s Chat Memory, or use SillyTavern or Perchance, which import chat files.
Do I need CAI Tools or another browser extension?
No. Extensions copy characters from the Character.AI website while you are logged in, so they only work while the site and your account are up. Chatbound reads the export file you downloaded, so it works from the file alone.
Why is Personality empty after the import?
Because the character was made by someone else, or its description was empty. The export only has definitions for characters your account created. Write a short Personality in Janitor AI, or type a description in Chatbound before saving the card.
Can I import the JSON card instead of the PNG?
Not in Janitor AI’s creator: it reads the card from the image you choose, so use the PNG. The JSON card is for apps that take a file, such as SillyTavern and Sakura.fm.
Does Janitor AI or Chatbound see my export?
Chatbound opens the export in your browser and sends it nowhere. Janitor AI only receives the PNG card you upload, like any character image.
Is Chatbound made by Janitor AI or Character.AI?
No. Chatbound is an independent tool by Peak Apps Studio. It is not affiliated with Character Technologies, Janitor AI or SillyTavern.
