Import your Character.AI characters and chats into Perchance
Perchance’s AI Character Chat (perchance.org/ai-character-chat) has an import button that reads Tavern character cards and SillyTavern-style chat files. Chatbound makes both from your Character.AI data export. Import the character first, then its chats.
Have your export? Open it in Chatbound and use the Move to another app tab. It makes the card and the chat files on your device, from the file, without the Character.AI website. One character is free.
Open your exportStep by step
- Open Chatbound and drop the export ZIP from the Character.AI email. When it asks, type the email address of your Character.AI account: that is the ZIP’s password.
- Open the Move to another app tab and choose the character. Characters your account created come with their whole definition. For a character made by someone else, type the name you knew it by.
- Click Save the card (PNG). Then, under the same character, check the preview of who wrote which message and click Save this chat (JSONL) for each chat you want.
- Open AI Character Chat on perchance.org. Below the list of chats is a row of buttons that ends with export and import.
- Click import and choose the PNG card. The character’s editor opens, already filled in. Save it, and a new chat with the character starts.
- Click import again and choose a .jsonl chat file. When Perchance asks Keep existing data?, leave “Yes, keep.” and click import data.
- Perchance says “You’re importing a TavernAI thread” and asks you to choose the character for it. Choose the one from step 5 and submit. The chat opens with every message.
Import the card before its chats: when you import a chat, Perchance only offers characters it already has.
Where each field lands
| In your Character.AI export | In Perchance |
|---|---|
| Name | Name |
| Description | The character’s instructions, as “# Description of {{char}}” |
| Greeting | The character’s first message |
| Definition | An example dialogue that the AI sees and you don’t |
| Tagline | Not imported |
| No picture | The card’s picture becomes the avatar (Perchance stores it as a JPEG of at most 768 pixels) |
Each chat in message.json | One thread, every message in order, yours and the character’s as you set them in Chatbound |
Who wrote which message
The Character.AI export doesn’t record the sender of a message, and a chat file has to. Chatbound lays the turns out the way a Character.AI chat runs, the character’s greeting first and then you, and shows a preview before you save. Where a chat goes out of step, press Swap from here on the first wrong message. The text is copied exactly.
Characters you didn’t create
For a character made by someone else, the export has only your chats with it. Its card holds the name you type and its greeting. Write the rest of its instructions in Perchance’s editor, or type a description in Chatbound before saving the card.
Keep a backup
Perchance’s AI Character Chat keeps your characters and chats in your browser’s storage on that device. Its export button saves them to a file; use it from time to time, and keep your Character.AI export as well.

Questions
Does Perchance import Character.AI chats?
Yes, as a SillyTavern (TavernAI) chat file, which is what Chatbound saves. Import the character first, then the .jsonl file, and choose the character when Perchance asks.
Can I import the JSON card instead?
Yes. Perchance’s import button also reads a card saved as JSON. The PNG brings a picture as well.
Why does Perchance ask whether to keep existing data?
It asks for every import that isn’t a picture. “Yes, keep.” adds the chat to what you have. The other answer deletes your existing data, so don’t choose it.
Is Chatbound made by Perchance or Character.AI?
No. Chatbound is an independent tool by Peak Apps Studio. It is not affiliated with Character Technologies, Janitor AI, SillyTavern or Perchance.
