How to transfer a Weebly domain to another registrar

To move a domain away from Weebly, switch off the Registrar Lock in your dashboard. That gives you the EPP authorization code. Give the code to your new registrar. Our advice is to allow about two weeks. Wix says a transfer can take up to 7 days, and Squarespace says to contact your provider if it is still pending after 15 days. Weebly says a domain cannot move within 60 days of its registration or of a change to its registrant email, phone number or name.

Step 1 at Weebly: switch off the lock and copy the code

Weebly's notice gives these steps (Upcoming Changes to Weebly’s Global Operations):

  1. In your Weebly dashboard go to Websites, then Domains, click Manage and then Manage Domain on the domain you are moving.
  2. Switch off the Registrar Lock. That gives you the EPP authorization code. Copy the whole code.
  3. Do not change any contact details on the domain. Weebly's notice says a change to the registrant email, phone number, first name or last name starts a 60-day registrar lock, and asks you to wait until after the transfer.

Switching off the lock also switches off Whois privacy, so set it up again at the new registrar. If you stop the transfer, our advice is to switch the Registrar Lock back on. A country-code domain such as .co.uk or .de works differently. If you bought one through Weebly, the notice says to ask Weebly's support team.

These steps are for a domain registered through Weebly. If you bought it somewhere else, ask that company to switch off the lock and give you the code.

Step 2 at the new registrar: give it the domain and the code

The receiving side differs by company. Two of them document it, and both ask for the domain and the code.

SquarespaceIn the Domains panel choose "Use a domain I own", enter the domain, click Transfer Domain, paste the code into the Authorization Code field, then Save and Continue (Transfer a domain to a Squarespace site). The domain must be active, on a supported TLD, and with its current provider for at least 60 days. If the transfer is still pending after 15 days, contact your provider. DNS changes take effect after the transfer completes, and the page says your MX records transfer along with the domain, so leave them in place. The transfer itself is free, but Squarespace charges a registration fee that extends the domain by one year, and the price depends on the TLD.
WixSwitch the domain's lock off at your current registrar and get the authorization code, also called the EPP code, from them (Transferring a Domain Purchased Elsewhere to Wix)."The transfer process can take up to 7 days to complete", and a status of pending or in progress is normal. Wix does not say what happens to your site or email meanwhile, so ask Wix support if email matters.

Other registrars, GoDaddy among them, use their own buttons. We have not documented them, so follow their help page for moving a domain in. Squarespace adds that some current providers take a day or two to produce the code, so ask for it early.

How long to allow

Put the pieces together: a day or two for the code, up to 7 days at Wix, and a retry if something is rejected. Weebly's notice says owners in the 67 countries keep their login until December 26, 2026 to move their domains. Our advice is to start as soon as you can. The first week of December is the latest we would leave it, so a retry still fits before that date.

If you registered the domain, or changed its registrant email, phone number or name, less than 60 days ago, the transfer cannot start yet. Weebly says this is an ICANN rule, not its own policy. Count the 60 days first, and use the next section meanwhile.

These dates are for the 67 countries in Weebly's notice, and the United States is not one of them. The notice covers only those 67 countries and names no deadline for any other. The steps above still work for any transfer.

Email on the domain stopsOften the email (MX) records did not move with it.Keep the MX records, as Squarespace says. If you use Google Workspace, the notice says to contact Weebly for help moving it to Google.

If you are not ready to move the domain yet

You do not have to transfer to leave Weebly. The notice suggests "keeping your domain name with Weebly and setting it up to work with another host", which means pointing its DNS records at the new host. That only works while you can still log in to Weebly. Move a Weebly site to another host shows the free hosts and the records they ask for.

The site and the domain move separately. To get the pages, pictures and files out, download your Weebly site and open the archive in Rehoused. If you cannot get into the account at all, see Can't log in to Weebly.

Open your Weebly archive

Choose the archive ZIP Weebly emailed you: the same pages come back as a clean website with the pictures the archive holds in place, and a report lists what the archive could not bring. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

Questions

How do I transfer my domain from Weebly?

In the Weebly dashboard go to Websites, Domains, Manage, Manage Domain. Switch off the Registrar Lock to get the EPP authorization code, then give the code to your new registrar, which finishes the transfer.

Why can I not transfer my Weebly domain?

The usual causes are a lock that is still on, a code that was rejected, or the 60-day rule. Weebly says a domain cannot be transferred within 60 days of its registration, and a change to its registrant email, phone number or name starts a new 60-day lock.

How long does a Weebly domain transfer take?

Wix says its transfers take up to 7 days. Squarespace says to contact your provider if the transfer is still pending after 15 days. Allow extra time for the code and for a retry.

Do I have to transfer the domain before Weebly closes?

Weebly's notice tells owners in the 67 countries to move their domains before December 26, 2026. It also suggests keeping the domain at Weebly and pointing it at another host, which works only while you can log in.

Will my email keep working during a domain transfer?

Squarespace says to leave the MX records in place, and says they transfer along with the domain. Wix does not say, so ask Wix support if email matters. For Google Workspace, Weebly's notice says to contact Weebly.
