Chicken coop designs for 10 chickens

Ten hens need 30 to 40 sq ft of floor and 100 sq ft of run. The tool builds them a walk-in coop 7 ft by 6 ft beside a run 17 ft long and 6 ft tall, with three nest boxes and two roost bars, from 94 boards and 4 rolls of hardware cloth.

The design: a walk-in coop 7 ft by 6 ft

At ten hens the house reaches 42 sq ft, and that is the size where a walk-in starts to earn its extra boards. This one is a small shed on skids with a door for you, beside a run 17 ft by 6 ft that is 6 ft tall, so you can walk into that as well.

The raised house gives the same 42 sq ft of floor from 60 boards instead of 94, and its 42 sq ft underneath stays in the run, which is why its footprint is shorter. You give up standing room: its run is 4 ft tall and the house is cleaned from outside, through the clean-out door in its front wall.

Questions

What size coop do 10 chickens need?

30 to 40 sq ft of floor inside and 100 sq ft of run, at Virginia Tech's 3 to 4 and 10 sq ft a hen; 42 sq ft and 102 sq ft in this design.

How many nesting boxes for 10 chickens?

Two to three at one per four or five hens; Penn State's rule gives 4. The tool builds three.

Is a walk-in coop worth it for 10 hens?

For cleaning and for you, yes; for the hens the space is the same. It takes 94 boards against 60 for a hen house on legs of the same floor.
