Turn a list of names into cut-ready SVG files

Paste names, one per line. Each one is welded into a single piece, sized to match the others and laid out on your mat, ready for Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio or a laser. Free for up to 10 names per file, and nothing leaves your device.

In Design Space: Upload, choose the SVG, then check one name’s size in the layer panel against the list above before you cut.

    How to use it

    1. Add the names. Type or paste them one per line, or copy a column from a spreadsheet. With Pro you can drop the Sold Order Items CSV from Etsy instead and pick the field that holds the personalization.
    2. Pick a font and a size. Same width suits stocking cuffs and labels, same height keeps the letters one size, and Fit a box keeps long and short names inside one blank, such as an ornament.
    3. Check the pieces. The list under the mat gives each name’s finished size and flags any name that would cut into more than one piece, apart from the dots on i and j.
    4. Download and cut. Upload the SVG to Design Space, or open it in Silhouette Studio, and check one name’s size before you cut the batch. For iron-on vinyl, turn on Mirror for the mat in Design Space.

    Which file to download

    FileUse it for
SVGCricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio Designer Edition, Inkscape, laser software. Sized in inches; each name is one filled path with its own layer.
PNG 300 dpiSublimation and printing. The file records 300 dpi, so it prints at true size at 100%. Transparent background.
DXFSilhouette Studio Basic Edition, which can’t open SVG, and CAD or laser programs. Inches; names and backings on separate layers.
ZIP ProOne SVG per name, sized to the name, in a folder per Etsy order when the names came from a CSV.

    What “welded” means here

A script font draws every letter as its own shape. The letters only look joined because the shapes overlap, so if you cut them as they are, the blade follows each letter’s whole outline and the name falls apart. Weld in Design Space merges overlapping shapes into one outline. This tool does that for every name at once: the letter outlines are traced to within about 0.03 mm and merged with a polygon union, so each name becomes one compound path and the holes in o, a and e stay open.

Some script fonts stop a capital, or the odd lowercase pair, just short of the next letter. With Join letters that don’t touch on, each loose letter slides left until it overlaps its neighbour by a small fixed amount, which is what you would do by hand before welding. With Bar under the letters on, a rounded bar along the baseline ties the whole name together, the usual fix for block letters.

    The five fonts, tested

We welded 38 test names in each font, from Mia and Zoë to Jessica-Marie, Łukasz and Siobhán, at 3 in wide, and counted the pieces each one cuts into, leaving out dots and accents.

    Questions

Can Cricut Design Space import a list of names?

Not as finished pieces. You can paste a list into one text box and use Ungroup to Lines to get one text box per name. In a kerned font, letters that touch weld on their own when you cut, but every name still has to be sized, and letters that don’t touch nudged together, one name at a time. This tool does that for the whole list and gives you one SVG in which every name is its own layer. Both methods, step by step.

Why is each name a single compound path?

So it cuts as one piece and stays one layer. Overlapping letters are merged into one outline, which is what Weld does in Design Space, and the holes in letters such as o, a and e are kept.

Will the names come in at the right size in Design Space?

Yes. The SVG states its size in inches and Cricut’s help pages say SVG files upload as designed. Compare the size in the Design Space layer panel with the size shown under the mat before you cut a batch.

Does it work with Silhouette Studio?

Silhouette Studio needs Designer Edition or above to open SVG files. With the free Basic Edition, download the DXF instead; it holds the same outlines.

Why are the dots on i and j separate?

In almost every font the dot of an i or j, and accents such as the two dots on Zoë, are drawn apart from the letter. They cut as small separate pieces. Turn on the backing layer if you want everything to sit on one shape.

Is the name SVG generator free?

Yes, for up to 10 names per file, with no watermark and no sign-up. Pro is a one-time $15 purchase that removes the limit and adds Etsy CSV import, the backing layer, a ZIP with one SVG per name, mirrored PNGs and more mat sizes.

Can I use my own font?

Yes. Choose a TTF, OTF or WOFF file on your computer. Your browser reads it and nothing is uploaded. If you sell what you make, check that the font’s licence allows commercial use.
