Common sizes
Printed outside the finished size, so you can fold it under and stitch the label down. Choose none for fusible label sheets.
With a header row, columns fill their fields: Quilt name, Made for, Made by, Date, Place, Message, Washing (or Awarded to, Pieced by, Quilted by, Bound by for Quilts of Valor). Empty cells keep the wording on the label.
How it works
- Type the wording. Quilt name, who made it, who it’s for, the date and the place. A message and a washing note are optional. The label sets the words as you type and shrinks them to fit.
- Choose a border and lettering. Hand stitch, sawtooth, flying geese, cornerstones, scallops, stars, log cabin corners or a fine line, in six ink colors, with script, serif, handwritten, typewriter or modern lettering.
- Test on paper, then print on fabric. Print at 100% and measure the check square. Then feed one fabric sheet, set the ink as its pack says, cut on the gray line, fold the allowance under and sew the label on. The full method.
Size, allowance and sheets
The size you set is the finished label. A fold-under allowance, 1/4 in unless you change it, prints outside it with small fold marks, and the gray cut line sits on its outer edge. A 6 × 4 in label therefore needs a 6 1/2 × 4 1/2 in piece of fabric, and two of them fit on an 8.5 × 11 in sheet.
Choose no allowance for fusible label sheets, or when two edges of the label go into the binding. The free PDF puts one label on a US Letter or A4 page; Pro packs a whole sheet and turns labels sideways when that fits one more.
| Label (finished) | 8.5 × 11 in sheet | A4 sheet |
|---|---|---|
| 3 × 2 in | 9 | 9 |
| 4 × 3 in | 5 | 4 |
| 5 × 3 in | 3 | 4 |
| 6 × 4 in | 2 | 2 |
| 7 × 5 in | 1 | 2 |
With a 1/4 in allowance on every side, a 1/4 in printer margin and no space between labels.

Whole fabric sheets, and a label for every quilt on a list
- Fill a sheet. As many labels as fit on 8.5 × 11 in, A4, 11 × 17 or 13 × 19 in fabric, with cut lines and fold marks. Five 4 × 3 in labels on one Letter sheet instead of one.
- Labels from a list. Paste names, or rows from a spreadsheet with columns like Made for, Quilt name and Date, and every label is laid out on as few sheets as possible. Made for a guild’s charity quilts or a group’s Quilts of Valor.
- Saved designs. Keep your usual border, lettering, size and wording, and start the next label from it.

Why a label at all
The Quilt Alliance runs its labeling campaign under the line “No More Anonymous Quiltmakers”. Its minimum is your name and when and where the quilt was made; its longer list adds the purpose, the recipient, the size, the fibers, the pattern and a title.
Those few words are what a family, a museum or an appraiser has to go on decades later. The Alliance also suggests sewing a label on before the quilting, so it is stitched through every layer and stays put.

Questions
How big should a quilt label be?
There is no standard size, and neither the Quilt Alliance nor the Quilts of Valor Foundation sets one. Let the words decide: the tool shrinks the text to fit and warns when the smallest line drops under 7 pt, which can blur on fabric. With a 1/4 in fold-under allowance, two 6 × 4 in labels or five 4 × 3 in labels fit on one US Letter fabric sheet.
What printer and fabric do I need?
An inkjet printer and printable fabric sheets with a backing, such as June Tailor Colorfast or EQ Printables, which come in 8.5 × 11 in. June Tailor says its fabric sheets must not go through a laser printer. Print the PDF on plain paper first to check the layout. Sheets compared.
Will the printed label wash out?
That depends on the fabric sheet and your printer ink. EQ Printables sets the ink by soaking the printed sheet in water and recommends hand washing only when necessary. June Tailor rinses and presses its Colorfast sheets to set the ink. Jacquard says labels printed on its inkjet fabric are not washfast. Follow the instructions in your pack.
Will the label print at the right size?
Yes, if you print at 100% or Actual size. The PDF places the label at its exact size and adds a check square beside it. Measure the square on a plain-paper test before you print on fabric.
Can I make a Quilt of Valor label?
Yes, and it is free. Switch the wording to Quilt of Valor: the label gets the words Quilt of Valor, the awardee’s name or a line to write it on, and who pieced, quilted and bound the quilt. The tool checks the wording against the rules in the QOVF Policies and Procedures Manual. The requirements.
What is the mirror option for?
Iron-on transfer paper prints in reverse, so tick Mirror for transfer paper and the words read correctly once ironed on. Printable fabric sheets are never mirrored.
Is my wording uploaded?
No. The label is drawn and the PDF is made in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. See privacy and licenses.
What does Pro add?
