Measure the cuff
- Lay the stocking flat and measure the cuff across the front only, seam to seam. Measure its height from the fold to the bottom edge.
- Take off a margin. We use 0.75 in each side and 0.75 in top and bottom, so the name box is the cuff width minus 1.5 in by the cuff height minus 1.5 in. Seams, the fold and the hanging loop all eat into the edges.
- Size every name to fit that box with Fit a box in the name maker. Long names fill the width; short names stop at the height.
| Cuff, front, flat | Name box | Open the maker |
|---|---|---|
| 6 × 4 in | 4.5 × 2.5 in | 4.5 × 2.5 |
| 7 × 4.5 in | 5.5 × 3 in | 5.5 × 3 |
| 8 × 4 in | 6.5 × 2.5 in | 6.5 × 2.5 |
| 9 × 5 in | 7.5 × 3.5 in | 7.5 × 3.5 |
The 0.75 in margin is our rule of thumb, not a standard. On a cuff with a chunky edge or pom-poms, leave more.
Why one width for every name doesn’t work
Script names have very different proportions. We measured six names in Dancing Script, welded at four widths. At the same width, Mia comes out more than twice as tall as Charlotte:
| Name width | Mia | Emma | Oliver | Grandpa | Elizabeth | Charlotte |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5 in | 2.59 in | 1.57 in | 1.66 in | 1.46 in | 1.35 in | 1.08 in |
| 5.5 in | 3.17 in | 1.92 in | 2.03 in | 1.79 in | 1.64 in | 1.31 in |
| 6.5 in | 3.75 in | 2.27 in | 2.40 in | 2.11 in | 1.94 in | 1.55 in |
| 7.5 in | 4.32 in | 2.62 in | 2.77 in | 2.44 in | 2.24 in | 1.79 in |
Height of the welded name, top of the tallest letter to the bottom of the lowest, measured with the name maker on 8 October 2026.
With a 6.5 × 2.5 in box instead, Charlotte stays 6.5 in wide and 1.55 in tall, Emma is 6.5 × 2.27 in, and Mia stops at 2.5 in tall, which makes her 4.34 in wide. Every name fits the cuff, and the short ones still look deliberate.
Which vinyl, and on which cuff
- Felt, velvet, canvas and flat knit cuffs take iron-on vinyl (HTV) well. Glitter iron-on is the usual choice for names. Cricut’s Heat Guide gives the temperature, time and pressure for each iron-on and base material; follow it rather than a general number.
- Mirror iron-on before cutting. In Design Space, Mirror is set on the Prepare screen, and Cricut notes it has to be turned on for each mat separately.
- Faux fur and chunky knit cuffs have a pile the vinyl can’t press flat against. Cut the names from felt or glitter cardstock instead and stitch or glue them on, or put the name on a separate tag.
- Stocking name tags: cut each name with a backing layer (Pro) from cardstock or thin wood, punch a hole in the backing and tie it to the loop. The backing is an offset outline, so the name keeps its shape.
Cutting the whole family at once
Five names sized to a 6.5 × 2.5 in box, Mom, Dad, Emma, Oliver and Charlotte, fit on one 12 × 12 in mat with a 0.25 in margin and gap: two on the first row, then one per row. With the free version you can cut up to 10 names per file; Pro takes a whole list, or your Etsy orders CSV, in one go.
