What a conical warp does

A tapered cup is a slice of a cone, and unrolled flat its surface is a curved band. To look straight on the cup, a design has to be bent into that band: horizontal lines become arcs around the cone’s tip, vertical lines point at the tip, and the design narrows toward the bottom in step with the cup.

Skip the warp and a rectangle wrapped on a tapered cup tilts: text climbs toward the seam and the ends don’t meet. This tool does the bend from your measurements, so the top of the design follows the top edge exactly and the bottom follows the bottom edge.

A flat grid on the left becomes a curved, narrowing grid on the right after a conical warp flat design after the conical warp
Rows become arcs, columns point at the cone’s tip, and the bottom narrows with the cup.

Why your usual app can’t do it

AppWhat its own help pages say
Cricut Design Space“Warp is an exclusive feature for Cricut Access subscribers”, and “the only thing you cannot warp is a printable image for Print Then Cut.” A sublimation print or a print-then-cut design is a printable image. Cricut Help
CanvaCurve is one of Canva’s text effects. We found no arc or cone warp for images in its help pages; the Liquify app distorts images freehand, which can’t follow a measured cup. Canva Help
Silhouette Studio“Advanced warp (Conical, Perspective)” is listed for the Designer Plus and Business editions, not the free Basic edition. Silhouette America
PhotoshopEdit > Transform > Warp, then a style from the Warp menu, adjusted with Bend and distortion values. You match the bend to a template by eye. Adobe Help

How to warp a design here

  1. Enter the cup’s measurements: top diameter, bottom diameter and the height of the area you print. Or open a size from the size chart.
  2. Add the flat design. The tool shows the best size for it: the length of the top edge by the length of the side, at 300 dpi. A design made at that size bends with no stretching along the rim.
  3. Choose how it fits if your design has a different shape: Stretch fills the template, Fit keeps all of it, Fill trims the edges.
  4. Tick Mirror for sublimation, and add a bleed if you want the print to run past the cut line.
  5. Download the 300 dpi PNG (clear outside the shape) or the PDF, and print at 100% (“Actual size”).

Questions

Can Cricut Design Space warp an image for a tapered tumbler?

Cricut’s help center says Warp is an exclusive feature for Cricut Access subscribers, and that the only thing you cannot warp is a printable image for Print Then Cut. A sublimation or print-then-cut design is a printable image, so it can’t be warped there.

Is this conical warp tool free?

Yes. Warping one design at a time and downloading it as a 300 dpi PNG or PDF is free, with no watermark and no sign-up. Pro ($19, one-time) adds batch warping to a ZIP.

Why does my design get narrower at the bottom?

Because the bottom of a tapered cup is smaller around than the top. A design that wraps all the way round has to shrink sideways in the same proportion toward the bottom. On a cup 3.5 in across the top and 2.75 in across the bottom, the bottom row is 21% narrower.
