40 oz tumbler template: size & printable wrap

Most handled 40 oz tumblers have a straight upper body and a narrower base that fits a cup holder, so the wrap comes in two pieces. Here are the sizes suppliers publish, and how to make both pieces at true size for your own cup.

A handled 40 oz tumbler split into a straight upper section and a tapered lower section, with the matching flat pieces: a rectangle and a curved band whose top edge is the same length as the rectangle’s bottom edge 1 straight 2 tapered 1 · rectangle 2 · curved band same length at the join
The upper section is a cylinder, so its wrap is a rectangle. The lower section is a slice of a cone, so its wrap is a curved band. Both start from the same diameter where the taper begins, so the pieces meet edge to edge. Drawing not to scale.

Make both pieces for your tumbler

  1. Find the join. Run a finger down the side and mark where the straight body stops and the taper starts. Mark the top of the print below the lid seat, and the bottom of the print above the base curve.
  2. Upper piece (rectangle). Measure around the straight body, the height from the top mark to the join, and the space you want to leave at the handle. In the generator, enter the same number for top and bottom, the height, and the handle gap. Start the upper piece (opens with JPPlus’s published 3-7/8 in top diameter; type in your height).
  3. Lower piece (curved band). Top = the diameter at the join (the same as the upper piece), bottom = the diameter at the bottom mark, height = from the join to the bottom mark. Use the same handle gap. Start the lower piece (opens with JPPlus’s published top and base diameters; the base diameter is at the very bottom, so measure yours where the print ends).
  4. Print a paper test of both at 100% and tape them on. The bottom edge of the rectangle and the top edge of the band should be the same length and meet without a step.
  5. Bend your design. Split it in two at the join, then add the lower half to the band template in the generator so it is warped to the curve. The upper half needs no warping, since that piece is a rectangle.

Printing a 40 oz wrap

MakerFlo lists 8.5 × 14 in (Legal) as the smallest paper for its 40 oz template, and its 12.9 in wide top piece is wider than a Letter sheet is long, so it goes sideways on Legal. Pick the paper under Paper for PDFs in the generator and it will tell you if a piece doesn’t fit. If your printer only takes Letter or A4, Pro can split a piece across several sheets with alignment marks.

For sublimation, tick Mirror before you download the bent design, unless your printer software already mirrors. Print the PDF at 100% (“Actual size”) and check the scale square before you print on transfer paper.

When one piece is enough

Some 40 oz tumblers taper in one straight line from the top of the print to the bottom. Hold a ruler against the side: if it touches all the way down, a single curved template works, and the generator makes it from the top diameter, bottom diameter and height. If there is a bend in the profile, use two pieces: a single flat piece can’t follow both shapes and will wrinkle at the bend.

Questions

What size is a 40 oz tumbler template?

It depends on the tumbler. MakerFlo publishes a two-piece template for its 40 oz tumbler: Top: 12.9 × 5.75 and Bottom: 10.3 × 3.6 (tapered), on 8.5 × 14 in paper. For another brand, measure the cup and make both pieces at true size.

What paper do I print a 40 oz tumbler wrap on?

MakerFlo lists 8.5 × 14 in (Legal) as the smallest paper for its 40 oz template. A piece wider than your paper can be printed across several sheets.

Can I wrap a 40 oz tumbler with one piece?

Only if the tumbler tapers in one straight line from the top of the print to the bottom. On a tumbler with a straight upper body and a narrower base, a single flat piece can’t follow both shapes and wrinkles where they meet, which is why two pieces are used.

How much room do I leave for the handle?

Measure the space between where the handle attaches on your tumbler and enter it as the handle gap. Use the same gap for both pieces so the seams line up under the handle.
