Turn your coloring pages into a KDP-ready interior PDF

Drop in your pages. The maker sets the page size, bleed and gutter margin from KDP's own tables for your page count, adds blank backs so every design prints on a right-hand page, and flags images under 300 dpi.

What the maker sets for you

Every number comes from Amazon KDP's paperback help pages. The table shows the rule and what happens to your file.

RuleWhat KDP asks forWhat the maker does
Page sizeThe trim size; with bleed, 0.125 in wider and 0.25 in taller (8.5 × 11 becomes 8.625 × 11.25 in).Sets every PDF page to that size exactly.
Inside (gutter) margin0.375 in for 24–150 pages, 0.5 in for 151–300, 0.625 in for 301–500, 0.75 in for 501–700, 0.875 in for 701–828.Counts the final pages, blank backs included, and uses the matching gutter on the spine side of each page.
Top, bottom and outside marginsAt least 0.25 in without bleed, 0.375 in with bleed (0.125 in bleed + 0.25 in).Fits the art inside those lines, plus any extra white space you choose.
Page orderOdd page numbers on the right, even on the left.Starts at page 1 on the right; with blank backs, every design lands on an odd page.
Page countAt least 24 pages (72 for standard color), up to 550–828 depending on trim and paper; rounded up to an even number.Adds the final blank page to make the count even and warns outside KDP's range.
Blank pagesNo more than 4 blank pages in a row at the beginning or middle, 10 at the end.Never puts more than one blank page in a row; padding to the minimum stops at 10.
Image resolutionAt least 300 DPI; 600 DPI recommended as a maximum.Shows each page's printed DPI, warns under 300 and scales anything over 600 down to 600.
File hygieneFlatten transparency; no crop marks, metadata or “PDF creation logos or watermarks”.Flattens each image onto white and writes a plain PDF with no marks, logos or document metadata.

Which side does KDP print first?

The right. KDP numbers pages with odd numbers on the right-hand side, so page 1 is the first right-hand page you see when you open the book. With blank backs on, the maker places your first design on page 1, leaves page 2 blank, places the next design on page 3, and so on. Each design gets its own sheet: markers that soak through land on a blank page, and a finished picture can be cut out without losing another.

Blank backs double the page count, which can move the book into a wider gutter band and a thicker spine. The maker recalculates both as you add pages. More in single-sided coloring pages on KDP.

      Free and Pro

KDP lists “PDF creation logos or watermarks” among the reasons files fail review, so the maker never puts our name or a watermark in your book, free or paid. The free version is limited instead: up to 24 coloring pages at 8.5 × 11 in, which is enough for a short book or a full test of your workflow.

Pro is for publishers with more than one book: any page count, every KDP paperback trim size, front pages, page numbers, the cover template and saved setups.

      Questions

      Will KDP accept the PDF?

The file follows KDP's published specifications: page size, bleed, minimum margins for your page count, an even page count and odd pages on the right. KDP still reviews every file and checks your artwork, so open the previewer after upload and order a proof copy before you publish.

Should a coloring book interior have bleed?

Only if some art should run off the edge of the page. Line art with a white border doesn't need bleed. If even one page bleeds, KDP asks for the whole file to be set up with bleed, which makes each page 0.125 in wider and 0.25 in taller than the trim size. The bleed and margins calculator shows both layouts.

Why should each coloring page be on a right-hand page?

KDP prints page 1 on a right-hand page and puts odd page numbers on the right. Placing every design on an odd page with a blank page behind it means markers that bleed through the paper land on a blank page, and each design can be cut out without losing another.

What resolution do my coloring pages need?

KDP asks for at least 300 DPI at the printed size and recommends no more than 600 DPI. At 8.5 × 11 in without bleed, KDP's minimum margins leave a 7.875 × 10.5 in safe area for a book of 24 to 150 pages, so a design that fills it needs about 2363 × 3150 pixels. The maker shows the printed DPI of every page and warns below 300.

Does a coloring book need an ISBN on KDP?

KDP lists coloring books under “not generally low-content”, so the low-content option to publish without an ISBN isn't meant for them. You can use KDP's free ISBN or your own. See the KDP coloring book requirements checklist.

      Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The images are read and the PDF is built by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the pages.
